How long does a weed high last? Timelines for joints, vapes and edibles
A smoked high usually lasts 2 to 4 hours. A vape high is often slightly shorter, around 1 to 3 hours. An edible high lasts 4 to 8 hours, sometimes longer. The method of consumption matters far more than the strain.
Joint or bong
- Onset: within 1 to 5 minutes
- Peak: around 20 to 30 minutes
- Main effects fade: 2 to 4 hours
- Subtle after-effects (tiredness, slower reactions): up to 6 hours
Because the onset is fast, smoking is the easiest method to control. Take a few puffs, wait 15 minutes, decide.
Vaporiser
- Onset: 1 to 5 minutes
- Peak: 15 to 30 minutes
- Duration: 1 to 3 hours
Vaporised THC hits similarly fast but often feels cleaner and shorter, which makes it easy to underestimate how much you have taken.
Edibles
- Onset: 30 to 120 minutes
- Peak: 2 to 4 hours
- Duration: 4 to 8 hours, up to 12 on a high dose
The long delay is the single biggest cause of bad experiences. If nothing is happening after 45 minutes, that is normal. Do not take more before two hours have passed.
What makes it longer or shorter
- Dose: more THC means both a stronger and a longer high.
- Tolerance: regular use shortens the subjective high.
- Body and metabolism: an empty stomach speeds up edibles; food slows them.
- Mixing with alcohol lengthens and intensifies the effect unpredictably.
If it is too much
It is uncomfortable but not dangerous. Sit or lie down somewhere quiet, drink water, eat something light, breathe slowly, and remind yourself that it will pass. Cold water on the face and a calm friend both help. Time is the only real cure.
Planning around it
If you need to be functional, count backwards: a joint in the evening is mostly gone in 3 hours, an edible is not. The Joint Calculator estimates a dose for the intensity you actually want, which is the easiest way to keep the evening the length you planned.
